What does a senior mechanical engineer earn at a Sydney mechanical services contractor in 2026?
On a live Sydney brief in September 2026, a national HVAC and mechanical services contractor is offering $160,000 to $180,000 base plus super for a Senior Mechanical Engineer who can sit in design meetings and hold their own, then help deliver the outcome. Chris checked that against the live Sydney market on 17 September: comparable senior building services engineering seats at tier one contractors were advertising $150,000 to $190,000 plus super, so the offer sits at or above the top of the band, and the contractor has said it will pay above market for the right person.
What the seat is, and what it is not
This is a commercially literate design and delivery engineer. They articulate a mechanical solution to a builder, a consultant and a client in the same room, then help deliver it, commercially for the contractor and technically for the client. It is not a drafting seat and it is not pure consultancy. It reports to the Design Manager inside the construction division, not service.
Where the bar sits
Senior, but not too senior. Roughly ten to eighteen years in mechanical services, currently a senior or design engineer at a mechanical contractor, comfortable in front of a client and not yet chasing a Design Manager title. Contractor side delivery on commercial projects is essential. Two candidates with consultancy only backgrounds were put forward on this brief and did not land, including one with three and a half years of consultancy design at roughly $130,000.
Why contractors are paying now
Hospital and commercial work is stacking up. This contractor has a workload secured for the next three to five years and is hiring ahead of the pipeline, not backfilling. Data centre and digital infrastructure growth is pulling on the same mechanical and cooling capability, so experienced engineers who can run a design meeting are selective, and the contractors who explain their pipeline clearly are the ones who close.
