Construction and trades guide

What does a tradie or site leader need in place before starting on a commercial or data centre site in Australia?

Before day one on a commercial construction site in Australia a worker needs a current General Construction Induction card, the White Card, plus any high risk work licences and plant tickets the role calls for, verification of competency for the plant and tasks on that site, right to work and ID checked, the project or site specific induction completed, and SWMS and WHS acknowledgements signed. Data centre sites add their own access requirements and stricter site specific compliance, and the sensible contractor confirms all of it before committing to a start date.

The core list

White Card sighted with the expiry date recorded. High risk work licences for the tasks involved, for example working at heights, EWP, forklift, dogging and rigging where relevant, and plant tickets held with their expiry dates. Verification of competency for the plant and tasks on your site. Right to work and ID verified. The project or site induction completed before the first shift. SWMS and WHS acknowledgements signed digitally and kept on record. Trade licences for licensed trades, electrical, plumbing, refrigeration and air conditioning, current and matching the state.

What data centres add

Data centre environments are high compliance and programme sensitive. Expect security clearance or background checks for site access, escorted access rules, strict tool and materials control, and site specific inductions that run longer than a standard commercial induction. Where trades are already known, compliance current and matched to the site requirements, mobilisation can move quickly. Where they are not, a start date slips a week while paperwork catches up.

How we hold it so nothing lapses on your site

Tickets, licences and inductions are held against each person with their expiry dates, so a renewal is flagged before the shift rather than discovered on site. Onboarding, e-signatures, inductions, rostering and timesheets run through the one system, and the records are there when the auditor asks. Two referees on every candidate. Under a partnership programme the checklist is tailored to your sites and your induction requirements.

Common questions

Is a White Card enough to start on a commercial site?
No. It is the minimum. Most roles also need high risk work licences or plant tickets, verification of competency, right to work and ID checks, the site induction and signed SWMS and WHS acknowledgements.
What extra requirements do data centre sites have?
Security or background checks for access, escorted access rules, strict tool and materials control and longer site specific inductions on top of the standard commercial requirements.
